Policy
Fern Hill School’s policy is to remain open during the winter months, there are rarely “snow days” when school will close. (There are occasions when the Public School Board will cancel the busses, but that does not mean that Fern Hill School will be closed.) Fern Hill School recognizes that adverse weather conditions can impact school operations; for this reason there may be “snow days” during the year.
While every attempt is made to maintain normal operations and services for the benefit of students, it may occasionally be necessary to close the school for a day when extreme weather conditions occur. In such circumstances, any decision to close the school is made by the Principal and Chair of the Board prior to 7:00 am.
It may also be necessary to close the school earlier than the regular departure times when extreme weather conditions occur and the weather conditions are anticipated to deteriorate significantly during the day. In such circumstances, parents are notified by email by the Principal during the day.
Procedure
Communication of Closures/Early School Closures:
The following options are considered when deciding what to do during inclement weather situations:
- Fern Hill School is open as usual in which case no announcement will be made.
- Fern Hill School is closed for the day with an appropriate announcement being relayed:
- by email to the parents
- on the school website (https://www.fernhillottawa.com/)
- on facebook (https://www.facebook.com/fernhillottawa/)
- Fern Hill School is closing earlier than usual for the day with an appropriate announcement being relayed:
- by email to the parents
- on the school website (https://www.fernhillottawa.com/)
- on facebook (https://www.facebook.com/fernhillottawa/)
Parents are encouraged to access the above noted methods early in the morning and/or throughout the day, particularly on days when the weather is inclement.
Adjustments may be made to the daily schedule as needed.
